Requirements of responsibility

Zachary Schmidt | Contributing Writer

As a part of their revamped alcohol policy, Buena Vista University (BVU) is now requiring party registration for parties held on campus. Is this is a good idea? Is it really going to change anything? Yes! The party registration permits the students to still have parties but allows the college to be aware of what is going on at their campus. It also gives Campus Security a better control and understanding about any incidents. As a student, it is really nice to have a college care about what’s going on with their students. The requirement of registering parties is not to be a buzz kill but rather a push to become a safer, more responsible campus.

A contributing reason as to why many of the students chose BVU is because it is unique. Would BVU be different if they were just one of those colleges known for out-of-control parties, sloppy drunk young adults, and failing students? According to a survey, 44% of college students are considered binge drinkers. Facts like these remind the faculty that things need to change. I think it’s a bad idea to have a party on campus anyway, but it is an even worse idea to have one with classes the next morning. I have a hard time getting up in the morning even without a hangover. There are plenty of other ways to have fun without alcohol. Think about the real reason why you chose BVU and how you want others to view it as a place for higher education.

I think it’s interesting how a college student complains about having to pay five hundred dollars for books, but that same student will pay up to a thousand dollars over the course of the year for alcohol. Together college students spend an average of five billion dollars on alcohol each year. We all know that BVU is not cheap, so why wouldn’t you spend your money carefully?

The college is trying to change the way our students behave with alcohol without completely taking it away. With the party registration, students can learn to drink in a more mature and responsible way. If you would like to know more about the party registration, there are meetings on Thursday, Sept. 6th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in room 126 in the Science Center and Monday, Sept. 10th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Hansen 8. The meeting will also include responsible host training as well. It is your right to drink when you’re of age, but just because you are of legal age doesn’t mean you have the right to act irresponsibly. Like every alcohol commercial says, please drink responsibly.
