Shelby Bradley | Contributing Writer

Demetrius Heard, also known as “D”, is a senior digital media major from Chicago, Illinois and is in his fourth season at Buena Vista University (BVU) as a wrestler. Heard shows a great passion for wrestling and commitment towards his team.

“Being on the wrestling team has meant the world to me. I love being a part of something so positive with teammates that I can call my brothers,” Heard said.

Heard and Head Wrestling Coach Sevond Cole also have a meaningful connection. Heard says Cole has been like a father figure to him since he stepped onto the mat for the first time his freshman year. Heard also noted that Assistant Wrestling Coach Zach Mizer has been a great addition to the wrestling team, bringing fresh ideas and good advice about what needs to be done in order to be successful.

Heard had set specific goals for his season this year which were to finish the season on a good note, keep making lasting memories at BVU and to graduate on time in May. His favorite memory from the wrestling team is being a member and sharing a portion of his life with the young men that are part of the team now and those that have been a part of the team and moved on since freshman year.

Cole, who has been head wrestling coach at BVU for six years also has goals for Heard and the rest of the Beavers.

“Our goal for Demetrius was to get him to believe in himself as a wrestler. He has had many close matches this year with some great competitors this season,” said coach Cole.

Cole stated that the goal for the year as a team was to try and focus on effort and attitude throughout the season.

“As a team we wanted to give 100% effort, 100% attitude, 100% of the time. D has truly worked toward this goal all season and has been a great leader in the process,” Cole said.

Heard’s favorite part about BVU is the university in general and all the opportunities he has had while being a student athlete.

“Many adventures, good friends, and learning opportunities have come from me being a part of the BVU community,” Heard said.

The Beavers finished the season with an overall record of 3-9 and a conference record of 2-5. Heard had an individual record of 10-16.
