Men and women’s soccer start the season strong

The Buena Vista University (BVU) men and women’s soccer teams started the season off with a series of wins, and currently, both teams are undefeated.

The women’s team began with a 4-2 win against Bethany Lutheran on Friday, Aug. 29. Sophomore Naomi Wood put the Beavers on the board with the first goal of the night. During the second half, freshman Caroline Maher made the final goal.

The second match of the season was Sunday, Aug. 31, and the Beavers came out with a 4-0 win against Grace University. Junior Tori Carson scored the first goal 26 minutes into the game, giving the Beavers a head start. Carson, Maher, and Claire Arganbright all scored in the second half of the game.

The match against St. Catherine ended in a 0-0 tie on Friday, Sept. 5.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, BVU earned a 6-1 win against Martin Luther College. Carson recorded BVU’s first hat trick of the season earning half the points in the match. During the second half, the Beavers proved tough scoring another three goals.

The BVU men’s soccer team started the season with a 2-1 win against Bethany Lutheran on Friday, Aug. 29. During the first half of the match, neither team scored. Sophomore Kwame Antiwi put the Beaver’s on the scoreboard twice in the second half, one right after another.

“It’s a good feeling [being undefeated] being my first season here,” freshman Josh Hoffmann said. “Hopefully we can keep the can keep the streak going.”

August 31 proved tough and ending in a tie against Hamline.

Last Thursday the men traveled to New Ulm, Minnesota and left with a 2-1 win against Martin Luther. Rolando Zuniga made the first goal 30 minutes into the match, ending the first half tied 1-1. During the second half Steve Gutschenritter made the winning goal.

Both teams will take the field again tonight, Sept. 10 with a home match against Nebraska Wesleyan. The women start at 6 p.m. and the men’s match is at 8 p.m.
