The Buena Vista University’s (BVU) women’s tennis team finished off their fall season at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Individual Tournament held in Pella, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4.

Overall the Beavers made quite the appearance in the tournament. Seniors Tasha Nelson and Samantha Kavan were quarterfinalists in their classes. Sophomore Tarynne Kinghorn placed 3rd overall in the tournament. Kinghorn and Ipsen were quarterfinalists in doubles, while Nelson and Kavan lost first round. Kinghorn was very pleased with her results following the tournament.

“I was very excited to reach the semi-finals because it showed that my hard work I put in over the season and summer paid off. The season started off slowly for me so to be able to rebound from a tough season and to do well in the tournament was a great feeling,” Kinghorn said.

Going into this tournament Kinghorn stated that repetitive hitting was the best preparation she had. Kinghorn said the consistency definitely helped her as she progressed in the tournament, and the points became longer. Head coach Rick Halverson also took the season as a whole as preparation for this tournament.

“The strength of their competition throughout the conference season prepared the girls for the IIAC tournament. Each of them played against competition that was stronger than they were used to. By the time of the tournament, no one they played against surprised them,” Halverson said.

Overall Halverson was pleased with the 2014 season.

“I felt like we had a solid season. The girls all competed hard and had some pretty good results across the board. I think going forward, we are going to be a stronger team because of it,” Halverson said.
