When I arrived, to my surprise, a Piper Archer II had just landed and way taxiing back to the hangers.

Freshmen move-in day

Meghan Harmening | Contributing Writer

Freshmen Move-In Day! It’s a crazy time for the incoming freshmen, parents, Orientation Team, and faculty. It’s the last time the brand new freshmen can say their final goodbye to their parents. It is also the first day they start living out their day-to-day lives as college students.

Cue the crazy Orientation Team. I arrived on campus, and not five minutes had gone by when I was welcomed by a helpful team wearing orange shirts. When one has only visited campus a mere three times, it’s hard to imagine how things are going to go on move-in day. Forget expectations and uncertainness. I was greeted by a full day of rearranging my dorm room, making a new group of friends, and trying to forget how little of sleep I had gotten the night before.

Arriving on campus the first day, I had very few expectations; however, questions ran on repeat through my head all day long: Will I like my roommate? Will we be able to agree on how we rearrange our room? Can I have the bottom bunk, please? Will the food be good? Will I meet friends? What if I get homesick? Did I forget my favorite pillow at home? Did I remember to bring breakfast cereal? Will the rugs I bought fit in our room? Will I have enough storage space to store all my clothes?

And then it was Saturday. I woke up at 7:00 a.m., and Friday felt like it had happened over a month ago. All my questions were answered, and my mind ceased to worry about all the little things that could go wrong while I’m away from home. My roommate and I get along. I did get the bottom bunk. The food tastes awesome. I met a bunch of new friends. I haven’t felt homesick… yet. I remembered my favorite pillow. I didn’t forget my favorite cereal, Cheerios. The rugs I bought did, indeed, fit in our room. And all of my clothes did fit in my room… barely.

In the end, none of that really mattered. What mattered is that the day went smoothly. From each activity to the next, we were ushered in slowly, but surely, into our new family at Buena Vista University. I didn’t cry when my parents left to go back home. Despite the lack of sleep from the night before, I did make it through the end of the day. Working together with our University Seminar group was one of the best ways for incoming freshmen to find a closer group of friends. After spending several hours together over the weekend, it’s good to know there is a group of people I can count on in my seminar group. The only thing I would have changed is that Monday would have come sooner. I like going to my classes, getting into a routine again, and starting to find my niche. After all, that’s really what college is about: discovering your passion.
