Student M.O.V.E.’s Reading Restaurant

Ashlyn Norris | Staff Writer

BVU’s Student Mobilizing Outreach Volunteer Efforts (M.O.V.E.) has been busy at work planning their first service project of the year. By pairing up with the Storm Lake Educational Training Agency (ETA), M.O.V.E. is excited to offer first graders their very own “Readers Restaurant”. On Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 4:15-5:30 p.m., volunteers will travel to Storm Lake Elementary School and read to the young students while playing in a role of their “waiter” who will also bring the children snacks.

The “Reading Restaurant” plays off the idea that the first graders are actually sitting inside a restaurant where they would typically be choosing what food they would want to consume. However, at the “Reading Restaurant”, the children will be selecting what book they would like to have read to them from the “menu”. After delivering snacks, the “waiter” writes down their order and returns to the table to read them the book the book of choice.

“Reading Restaurant” is a part of a larger scale service provided by M.O.V.E. Once a month, M.O.V.E. offers “Alternative Happy Hours” for those who want to volunteer while also having a great time themselves.

“Happy hours are two hours out of a month where you can come and join Student Move in some fun service. This coming event is a chance to get your MOOVE on and use your creativity to read to a first grader. This event is also an excuse to read those kid books you miss! Come and have fun with us!” senior and Co-Vice President of Alternative Events Kimberly Perez said.

If you would like to volunteer next Wednesday for the opportunity to read some of your favorite books to the Storm Lake first graders, you can sign up in the Geisinger Student Leadership Center (GSLC). There will be transportation provided to the Elementary School for those who need it. If you need further information or have any questions, contact Perez or senior Alexa Guessford, M.O.V.E.’s Co-Vice President of Marketing. The event is also posted on Facebook under Student M.O.V.E.’s page where they have created an event titled “Alt Happy Hour: Reading Restaurant.”

“We are really excited about this event because it’s unlike anything we’ve done before,” Guessford said. “We think it will be a great way to kick off the year, not only for our volunteers but for the students, too.”
