Beavers edge Eagles in soccer

Griffin Truslow | Contributing Writer

The Buena Vista University’s (BVU) Beavers men’s soccer team traveled to Ankeny, Iowa on Thursday and walked away with a 3-0 victory over Faith Baptist Bible College (3-5). This marks their fifth win of the season (5-1-1).

“A lot of it comes from my teammates and coaching staff,” junior Tyler Lafferty said, who is filling up the stats on the national scale, being tied 25th in the nation for goals (6), tied for 24th for goals per game (1), Tied 24th for assists (4), and 27th in total points (14). Lafferty started the night’s action with a penalty kick goal in the 19th minute.

Sophomore Joey Stivers got involved with an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute, while freshman Matt Senuira ended the night with an unassisted goal in the 90th minute of the game.

Other Beavers putting themselves in the national stats are sophomore Juan Flores-Andrade and senior Eric Karita, who are both tied for 24th in the nation in assists with four. Working hard and sacrificing for the team is how Karita plans on keeping this up.

The Beavers had a ridiculous 23 shots on goal compared to the Eagles three. Eagles goalie Michael Craig was kept busy all night tallying 20 saves on the night in a losing effort. BVU did not let up, shooting 22 of their 36 shots in the second period.

BVU lost to Loras College 10-0 on Saturday afternoon. Loras College is ranked fourth nationally.

“We’re certainly aware they are a top five team,” Coach Baumbach said.

The Beavers will be back in action on Sunday as they go to battle against Grinnell College in Storm Lake at 1:00 p.m.
