As the weather changes, so does fashion sense. While fall fashion is just around the corner, there are many trends that emerged during the summer season that have created a fashion buzz on campus.
One such trend is the “bro tank,” which is quite the yay-or-nay fashion statement. In other words, it is a fad that people often have strong opinions about. The bro tank is a men’s tank top that is bright and colorful, usually with a brand name or a symbol on it. It is much used as a representation of summertime. So why are boys wearing these, and how is this trend affecting others in society in terms of fashion?
Freshmen Justin Kahl takes part in this fashion statement.
“I wear them every once in a while. They are comfortable, like a nice cut off t-shirt, and I can wear them out in public,” Kahl said.
Many bro tank wearers note that the shirts make it easy for guys to wear something cooling that frees them from the constraints of sleeves in the warm weather, while still looking presentable.
From another perspective, freshman Jordan Tynes gave her opinion on bro tanks.
“I don’t have a problem with them, but every guy that I meet wearing one is usually trying to make a statement, like he’s cool or something,” Tynes said.
Now, there is no telling if there is actually a valid connection between bro tanks and how a guy acts while wearing one, but that is a correlation she has noticed.
So, maybe guys wear bro tanks to be comfortable and stylish, or maybe they wear them because they want to show a certain image. There is always going to be arguments for or against any fashion trend. Clothes are one of the easiest forms of self-expression and also one of the easiest topics to talk about.
More fashions that have come out this season are vibrant and refreshing colors, such as coral, “berry,” and mint green. Many young students are rocking these colors on campus as the summer weather hangs around and winds down. Mixing and matching patterns, while maybe not as popular, is another forming trend, such as putting a polka dotted shirt with a pair of floral printed shorts. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the fashion of “high waisted shorts,” which are usually an older looking style of blue jean shorts that are worn high above the waistline and torn at the hem. They make an outfit look casual with a little edge to it.
The fashion world is full of twists and turns that change right along with the frequency of the seasons, and there is no way to tell which fashions will stick around and which ones will drift away. But for now, the bro tank is a fixture of late summer at BVU.
