Quality versus quantity

Quality+versus+quantity

Justice Kempf | Contributing Writer

When asked about Sodexo, many of the students on campus gave me a look of confusion. Sodexo is one of the largest food service companies in the world; they are the dining service that provides the meals for Buena Vista University (BVU).

Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a late night snack, students can be found in the Servery (The Serve) or the Grille. The Serve, or the Crossroads Café, is the main dining area in which students can pick a wide variety of foods, including a salad bar and a sub bar. The Grille, also known as the Beaver Den, is the additional dining area that offers classics such as pizza, burgers, and fries. The Grille is also open from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. for students who have a craving for a late night snack.

The most concerning part about BVU to some students was it was rumored that food here was not very good; however, it is all personal preference when it comes to food. There are some food items I really enjoy here, and there are others that are pretty easy for me to pass up. Freshman Miranda Schildhouse offers us her opinion on the food provided by Sodexo.

“I really like how there is such a wide variety of things to choose from, and I especially like the fact that they cater to vegetarians as well. I can usually find something I enjoy,” Schildhouse said.

On the complete opposite end, some students have claimed the Sodexo food has caused their stomach to feel uneasy after eating certain meals. Some even say that Sodexo is like high school food with more options. These negative reactions are directly related to how the cafeteria adopted the nickname “the Scurve” (a shortened term for the word “scurvy” meaning a disgusting disease).

Whether students find Sodexo satisfying or inedible, one thing is for sure. The favorite meal is definitely chicken nuggets; but who doesn’t love chicken nuggets? That’s my go-to whenever I eat at McDonald’s! Other favorites include fries, pasta, and macaroni and cheese. It has been said, however, by many students that pasta is very common, and these students get tired of the same meals being offered so often. I, myself, have noticed that pasta has become a weekly occurrence.

I personally think that compared to high school food, Sodexo is amazing. Even if there is a meal I don’t particularly like on a particular day, I can always find an alternative either in the Grille or over at the sub bar. It is all personal preference, though, so it’s up to you to decide how you feel about Sodexo Dining Services.
