On Sunday, Nov. 12, the Buena Vista University (BVU) Choir performed a concert with a variety of songs. They looked to provide a mixture of entertainment for the audience by showcasing their skills in a way differently than singing only classical pieces.
They got to pull pieces from musicals, operas, and other major works. Sophomore choir member Justice Kempf describes what this concert entailed.
“This concert was an homage to the stage. We focused on music that was originally performed in on-stage performances. The second half of the concert was entirely music from musical productions such as RENT and Chicago. We really focused on entertainment of the audience this time around instead of putting our efforts into strictly choral works,” Kempf said.
There is a lot of hard work and practice that goes into these concerts that BVU Choir puts on, especially when they are performing different styles of music.
“It was difficult having songs in other languages like French and German, as well as Italian. But overall, we tried a lot of new things and it went well,” sophomore choir member Matt Schulz said.
Although it was difficult to prepare, this concert was especially enjoyable for the choir members because of its expression. They were given more freedom to have fun with the pieces in this concert, such as the last song they performed, La Vie Bohem, from the musical RENT.
“My favorite part about this concert was my solo in La Vie Bohem. Solos are my favorite part of choir in general. They really are great because they showcase individuals’ voices for certain types of songs,” Kempf said.
The members were quite pleased with how the concert went and that they were able to overcome little bumps in the road.
“I love being able to work with such a talented group of students and make something special happen! It is a lot of time and effort, but it is so worth it when we see the outcome,” Schulz said.
