There is a brand new club that has been buzzing around the Buena Vista University (BVU) campus. It is the BVU Knitting and Crochet Club (KCC). Even though it is only beginning, it has generated quite a bit of interest and looks to do more than just knit and crochet.
With an email list of 31 people, 10 showed up to the first meeting. Meghan Harmening, the President of KCC, is excited about the numbers and hopes to keep that nice amount and more.
“The day BVU News announced our club, I had tons of emails asking if people could join. It was so exciting! I wanted a group of people I could connect with and who would share my love of knitting and crocheting. Plus, I always love learning new things, so I am hoping to get new tips from others who may be more experienced than I am,” Harmening said.
The club looks to learn to knit and crochet, but some less obvious but very important goals for the club are to connect with residents at Methodist Manor and spend a day knitting and crocheting with them. Along with that, they look to reach out to the community in other ways.
“We would like to donate some of our final products to those in need. We hope that by bringing all those who knit and crochet together, we can have an impact on both the BVU community and those in Storm Lake,” Harmening said.
Rosaline Russell, a member of KCC, is looking forward to the opportunities being in this club will bring to her.
“I hope to learn to crochet, knit different patterns and knit socks. I think it would be nice to be able to knit hats, mittens and other things for people who cannot afford the proper clothing for the cold winter. I would also love to meet lots of new people and hopefully share my knitting skills with them, as they share with me,” Russell said.
Russell is delighted that this club has begun.
“I think it is an easy-going atmosphere where people can come with no skill and leave being able to make things for themselves, gifts for friends, and potentially share their new skill with others around them,” Russell said.
There is currently no set meeting time, but if you would like to join, email Meghan Harmening at [email protected]. Even if you don’t know how to knit or crochet and would like to learn, you are equally welcome.
“Who isn’t in need of a little stress relief? I know I need it, so what better way to knit and crochet?” Harmening said.
