Award shows are often times the epicenter of controversy and drama; usually caused by the antics of a well-known celebrity. The audiences around the world and in attendance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards experienced déjá vu as Kanye West once again stormed the stage.
As singer and songwriter, Beck, was announced the winner of the 2015 Album of the Year Award, Kanye “jokingly” took the stage. He thought better of the decision and turned around once again taking his seat next to his wife Kim Kardashian West. This however, isn’t what everyone is raving about, it’s what Kanye said in an E! interview that has really stirred up trouble. In the interview, Kanye rants about how Beck and the Grammy Association don’t respect artists and how they are slapping them in the face. At one point in the interview Kanye declares that Beck should’ve given the award to Beyoncé.
In 2009 at the VMA Awards, Taylor Swift was awarded a Moon Man for Best Female Video of the Year. Kanye didn’t appreciate Beyoncé being overlooked in the category for her video “Single Ladies” which he described as the “best video of all time”. West took it upon himself to get on stage, taking the microphone away from Taylor to vent his frustration. Since then it’s believed the pair has moved past the conflict, however, it seems that Kanye has taken up dislike for any artist that beats the Queen B.
In my opinion, Kanye should’ve learned from his mistake in 2009, however, I feel like this second time was purely a publicity stunt to promote his brand. His rant on E! was uncalled for and was very inappropriate. I feel like it would’ve been polite to move on from the past incident. He talks without a filter and in the process degrades his own image because, even though he is a very talented artist, many people only see him as a bully. There was a rumor circulating that Kanye has been banned from future award shows, however, this has been proven untrue. I feel like this ban would’ve been justifiable due to the fact that Kanye hasn’t shown any regret for his actions.
All we can hope for is that Yeezus will see the light and follow the correct path. May it be to the stage, directing his followers, or sitting in his seat, I’m sure North West can point him in the right direction.
