Freshman Digital Media and Art Education double major April Weber hosts a radio show every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. The show is titled “Indie Hour”, and it focuses on indie and dance music, along with some dubstep. She planned the timing of her show strategically.
“I tried to plan it so that everyone would be getting ready for the day or sort of in between classes,” Weber said.
Weber had the name in mind for a while as it fit with the show she wanted to create. The show features this kind of music because it is her favorite. Some of the bands she plays include Empire of the Sun, Lana Del Rey, Foster the People, and Miike Snow. Her show normally begins with a song by Lana Del Rey.
“Like a year ago, I got into the indie music, and I just absolutely fell in love with it,” Weber said. “I never was really comfortable with my music preferences before I got into indie, and all of a sudden, it just became what I wanted to do because it’s not very popular, and I just thought, ‘Why not make it popular?’”
Weber believes some of the music she plays would be popular if others listened to it, and she hopes to promote the music on her own radio show to broaden the audience.
Other than playing music, Weber also recites a fun fact of the day. She follows a twitter account that helps her in each segment.
Between segments, she keeps up with a planned script that helps her stay confident on air.
“I’m still a freshman, so it’s just better safe than sorry. I know what I’m going to say. It gives me more confidence to say it,” Weber said. “So I’ll check over that, make alterations possibly. I’ll probably just be putting in songs.”
Weber doesn’t plan to add a co-host to her show just yet, but if she were to, she would want someone who knows about indie music.
Weber’s favorite part about having a radio show is the freedom to play her own music. She also enjoys the show because she knows she will benefit from it in the future. She hopes to eventually intern at an Omaha radio station, 94.1 and enter the radio business the radio world as a radio host.
“Radio is what I plan to do in the future, so it’s kind of the start to my future,” Weber said. “Hopefully in later years, people will know the show and listen and get popular. I’ll be more of a known DJ type person.”
