A Buena Vista University (BVU) alumnus was shot and killed outside of a movie theater last weekend in Joplin, Missouri. Derek Moore graduated in 2001 with a distributive major from the Graduate and Professional Studies site in Iowa Falls, according to the BVU Registrar’s Office.
Moore had recently begun his first year as an assistant football coach at Missouri Southern State University. Previously, he worked as a high school football coach in Ames, Iowa, and as a coach at Western Illinois University.
MSSU cancelled its homecoming activities in his memory.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event… Our thoughts are with his family, friends, Missouri Southern State University students and colleagues,” said Amy Jones, BVU Director of Annual Fund & Alumni Relations.
Moore is survived by his seven-year-old son.
