On Saturday, February 22, the Sports Marketing class, led by Professor Den Stulc hosted Screamin’ Beaver Saturday. This was an event created to attract a large, loud student section to the men and women’s last regular season conference games in Siebens Fieldhouse.
The class had a goal to reach out to the student body and get 500 people to attend the game and wear gold. They chose three leaders to get the word out about the event and make the event run smoothly. The leaders were seniors Jen Dimig, Samantha Kavan, and Michael Boyle who were in charge of promotion, reaching students, and in-game activity, respectively.
The effort to get students to attend started about a week before the event. The class created and hung up posters all around campus, created social media accounts to reach the student body, and sent out mass emails to try and get everyone involved. During class times leading up to the event, they did intensive planning.
“It was awesome to see how many Beaver students and fans got into the social media aspect leading into the game. The Screamin’ Beaver Facebook and Twitter page had a big impact on getting students to the game. This was a great group effort lead by three leaders Michael, Jen, and Sam. Everyone in my class pitched into to help make this event special,” junior Joe Krieger said.
The class received donations for prizes and giveaways from local business, planned activities to keep the crowd loud and energized, and worked cohesively to make the event an all around successful.
“We had a count between 250-300 students which was less than we were hoping for, but we also realized that it was a busy day on campus,” Krieger said.
Attending students received free raffle tickets for attending the game, a free half-court shot was held during the women’s half time, and prizes were given out throughout both games. Some of the prizes included gift cards to local business, restaurants, and Beaver athletic gear.
“While we did not reach as many students as we would have hoped, we were able to have a nice, gold-clad student section to make quite a bit of noise. The 10-point mayhem, where we remained silent until the 10th point and then went crazy, was a lot of fun,” Boyle said. “I have heard good things about it.”
Overall, this event was created to make students aware of what goes on at Beaver athletic events and to make them more excited about attending them.
“I think Professor Stulc wants to continue to plan projects like this in the future, and this project will definitely help plan for those. We were a trial run, and hopefully the Sports Marketing classes of the future can build on what we did and continue to make BVU athletics more exciting,” Boyle Said.
