The 2014 season isn’t the only thing new this year for the men’s soccer team. Ben McArthur, who spent three years at Waldorf College as an assistant coach, is now taking over as Head Coach for the Buena Vista University (BVU) Beavers. With every new coach comes new expectations and goals for the season.
“Coming into BVU I wanted to change the culture of the program. My expectations were to compete in every game this first season and give us a chance to get into the conference tournament,” McArthur said.
Before being hired as a coach at BVU, McArthur wasn’t necessarily searching for another coaching job, primarily because as an assistant coach at Waldorf College, he had seven returning starters and a few great recruits coming in.
“When this opportunity to coach (at BVU) came up, it was too good to pass up. I tease my wife that my head coaching career started one year early–not a bad thing!” McArthur said.
Although this is Coach McArthur’s first head coaching position, coaching definitely is not a new aspect to his career. McArthur has been coaching all types of different teams since he was 16 years old. These teams include club soccer, high school soccer, soccer camps, private individual soccer lessons, college soccer, and also snowboarding.
“All of those are forms of coaching, and I really enjoy the teaching aspect of it,” McArthur said.
The season for the Beavers has started off well so far with a 2-0-1 record. The Beavers next home match is against Nebraska Wesleyan is tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 10.
