My first Homecoming at Buena Vista University (BVU) was a night I don’t think I can ever forget. (Isn’t it funny how one night can turn into a night that you find yourself reminiscing about a year later?) I wasn’t really expecting much, but I remember seeing “real” food in the cafeteria and stocking up because I had never been so excited for grilled-chicken sandwiches and corn on the cob in my entire life. I was a little freshman girl who, (according to my TimeHop), tried finding her way by talking to people from Carroll that went here and spent a majority of her nights studying until two in the morning. But that first week I became part of the school.

I put my books away (because homework used to get finished on Fridays) and decided to go to the ceremony on Friday with everyone. Somehow I found myself getting weepy once the seniors came out because my sappy heart still shriveled up at the thought of graduation – even though it was four years away. (I guess that’s what happens when you always find yourself planning for the future and never necessarily focusing on the present.) I’m not sure if I went to any of the weekday activities because, like I said, a majority of my time was spent hanging out in the library and making friends with those who worked at the coffee shop. On this week, though, we became college students.

Friday was my first day at Maurices, and afterwards I rushed back to the school only to find myself pelted by rain and terrified that a tornado would touch down on campus. (Thanks, mom, for always blowing the weather out of proportion!) After the weather cleared and Homecoming festivities were finalized, our friends gathered around the hallway lounge and curled up in blankets watching movies all night. Game-day was absolutely perfect; I wore lipstick, clutched my coffee, and got the chance to wear my new combat boots (RIP). The weather started out absolutely gorgeous and somehow the cold caught up and wrapped itself around us. (We all clung to each other and still managed to take tons of shivering pictures after the game finalized). We spent so much time locking our room door whenever we stepped into the hall, whispering instead of talking in a normal voice, and laughing so hard we thought it would probably vibrate the whole building. The memories we made are some that I can’t help but look back constantly and be reminded of whenever I look up at my picture collages hanging on my walls. (They were perfect.)
