This year, the Buena Vista University (BVU) student organizations Teachers Inc. and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) sponsored the local CROP Walk, the oldest hunger-fighting fundraising event in the nation. These sponsor organizations were joined by members of the BVU wrestling and volleyball teams and other BVU students who all walked at the CROP Walk. In all, approximately 45 students volunteered during the walk.
“Overall, it was very successful, especially for only having two weeks to plan,” one of the organizers, sophomore JoAnna Pluym said.
Teachers Inc. and CEC raised almost $300. Churches in the Storm Lake area also donated money to the cause. In total, almost $1400 was fundraised. Many people are still sending in donations.
The local CROP Hunger Walk introduces the issue of world hunger to the community and participants. This walk helps communities across the country to work together in hopes to end hunger. Sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), CROP Hunger Walk is the oldest hunger-fighting fundraising event in the U.S. It involves over 1600 communities each year. Twenty five percent of the money raised from this CROP Hunger Walk will be donated to the upper Des Moines area.
