“Beavers Are” is a list of personal values or traits that are in conjunction with the Beaver’s Creed. Along with the “Beavers Are” values, Buena Vista University’s (BVU) Student Senate has decided to implement a recognition award called Beaver of the Month. Students, staff, and faculty may nominate a student based on what value is dedicated to that month.
October’s Beaver of the Month is Beth Weber. Weber has been chosen because she is “ethical.”
Senate had received a nomination for Weber that included the following information:
“Beth is an amazing person who truly cares about the people that come into her life, and she is willing to put time and effort into the relationships she forms. In addition, she is hard working in her classes, does an excellent job as an RA, and has a bright future ahead of her. One situation occurred where Beth had to evaluate and take care of an intoxicated student. While she explained the rules to the individual, she made it into a learning experience. Instead of pushing her ideals onto the person to show them the her ‘right way’ of living and acting, she taught the person how to form their own ‘right way.’ Being ethical isn’t just following rules or basing actions on one’s morals; it is behavior in a way that respects others different way of thinking in addition to your own.”
“There were several other candidates, but based on the preceding information, the Senate voted to have Beth Weber as October’s Beaver of the Month. She received a simple majority within the Senate to receive this honor,” said Meghan Harmening, chairperson of Senate’s Policy Advisory Committee (PAC).
November’s nominations are “adventurous”. Any student can be nominated except for members of Student Senate. Nominations will be taken here: http://goo.gl/forms/FZA3W9Rm9F. Once nominations close PAC will narrow it down to three students. All of Senate will therefore decide who will be the Beaver of the Month.
At the end of the year, there will be nominations for the Beaver of the Year. These nominations can only be by faculty and staff. The Beaver of the Year will be recognized at the Recognition Dinner.
