Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) is partnering with multiple organizations on campus to bring the Spring Fashion Show to Buena Vista University (BVU). Partnering organizations include Capture It, BVU Alliance, and International Club.
The Spring Fashion Show began as a simple idea between Tyson Domingo, Zachary Schmidt, and Andrea Frantz when the three went to a conference in Bethany, WV. Domingo, the president of SCJ’s BVU chapter, explained he and Schmidt outlined a plan then presented it to the group in the fall of 2014. Throughout the fall, SCJ continued to plan the show. The organization set the date and location. The team decided on a later date in the spring in hopes to offer the most amount of time to plan and prepare.
“I wanted to do something big for my senior year,” Domingo said.
To make the Fashion Show come to life, Domingo explains that he has assigned specific tasks to each organization helping. SCJ is in charge of finances and the planning of the event, while Capture It is handling design, International Club is overseeing applications, and BVU Alliance is conducting the promotions.
The application includes two categories: designers and stylists. Stylists partner clothing pieces together, while designers start from scratch. Within the two categories are two styles, student and international, while both are focused around college fashion.
With the help from businesses in Storm Lake, the Fashion Show will have clothing for the stylists to work with. The hope is for designers and stylists to speak about their designs and styles while the models are walking the runway. Therefore, designers and stylists are required to find their own models.
Applications are open until March 20. Domingo strongly encourages everyone to apply because it gives students an outlet to express their passions. He explained that anyone can get involved, and if someone wants to do something for the show, they can contact him.
The Spring Fashion Show will be Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in Dows Grand Ballroom. Apply for the show here.
“I really hope that it will make people realize these opportunities. That’s a great thing about BVU, students have the opportunity to make their ideas come to life,” Domingo said.
