BVU offers on-campus summer jobs to students

Samantha Hirschman | Assistant News Editor

Summer is often the time when students decide to work and make money. Many Buena Vista University (BVU) students will decide to live on campus and work. There are many job opportunities on campus. Although a job may not be advertised it doesn’t necessarily mean they do not have open positions.

Event Services is currently hiring students to be Conference Assistants (CA). CAs will spend their summer working in a team of 12-14 people. The Conference Team will help plan and facilitate the events and conferences on campus during the summer.

Sophomore Jessica Leeper was the 2015 Conference Manager.

“The members of the conference will not only get paid but also get to live on campus for free while having access to occasional free food when a conference is present. The job of a CA consists of many small tasks such as meal duty, room setup, desk duty, the distribution of keys, and a few other tasks,” Leeper said. “The benefit of having the opportunity to work as a CA is that it gives students the chance to learn certain skills such as teamwork, organization, communication, and customer service.”

Maintenance will also be hiring for the summer. Students working with maintenance will do a variety of tasks through the summer including cleaning and maintaining residential halls and academic buildings.

Senior Gregory Davis worked with maintenance the summer of 2014. He explained that the first few weeks they focused on cleaning the rooms in Pierce, White, and Grand. He also said he helped relay wax on the floors in Estelle Siebens Science Center. Throughout the summer, he performed a variety of tasks that helped in the general upkeep of the facility.

“The biggest benefit to working on campus was that I was able to stay on campus. This was important to me because I was then able to go through summer workouts with other members of the football team who were staying in the area,” Davis said.

Many of the jobs during the summer are year round jobs as well, such as Sodexo. Sodexo offers jobs as kitchen staff, catering, and in the Common Grounds Coffee Shop. Other jobs include the library, book store, and admissions Tele Team.
