Buena Vista University Student Senate is constantly working on projects to help improve student living on campus as well as provide accommodations to student requests, according to Senate President Austin Groth.
Most recently, conversations in the senate meetings have led to discussion of a student activities wall, ice machines in each of the residence halls, and the utilization of the televisions around campus to broadcast student events.
All projects are still in the stages of conversation, but Groth believes that many of the ideas are worth pursuing long term.
Groth comments to the Tack ONLINE that many of the projects need to be “worked out” logistically and otherwise before action can be taken; such as the ice machines in each of the residence halls on campus:
“We know that this project is costly, but if there is enough student interest, we think that this is a project worth pursuing,” Groth said.
Groth stresses that student interest is the main priority. Informing students of events and activities on campus, as well as providing praise to student organized events, is important. The student wall and utilization of the televisions on campus will ensure both of these things, according to Groth.
“The first project is utilizing the TVs around campus to promote student events. If approved, this would be something that could be utilized by all student organizations, but Student Senate would be responsible for updating the TVs. We have received support from various departments on campus, but we still need to work out some of the logistics,” Groth said.
He also commented about the use of the student activities wall:
“Another project Senate is working on is the creation/modification of a student wall. The details of this project are still being worked out as we are working to figure out what students would like to see this space utilized as. We will then create a proposal that will be submitted for approval,” Groth said.
Groth encourages students to attend senate meetings and reach out to senators. This will ensure that student voices are heard.
“Student Senate is here to serve students, and we want to hear from the student body. It can be a challenge to represent the entire student body, so I encourage students to reach out to Senators or attend one of our weekly meetings—we meet at 6:15 PM every Thursday in Forum 1,” Groth said.
