In light of Athletic Director and Title IX Coordinator Christyn Abaray departing from Buena Vista University (BVU), current Employer Relations Coordinatior Emily Gallagher has been named the new Title IX Coordinator.
Gallagher stresses the understanding of what Title IX entails.
“Title IX is a comprehensive federal law that prohibits sex discrimination on campus. Title IX also prohibits retaliation regarding interfering with any right or privilege secured by Title IX. Sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape and sexual exploitation, can be a form of sex discrimination under Title IX,” Gallagher said.
The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating BVU’s efforts to comply and carry out the responsibilities under Title IX.
According to Gallagher, some of those specific responsibilities include:
-Conducting trainings for students, faculty, and staff so everyone is aware of their rights and
obligations under Title IX, including what constitutes sexual misconduct and how to report any
allegations of sex discrimination
-Monitoring investigations to ensure they are handled properly and in a prompt and timely manner
-Providing remedial measures, if necessary, to ensure complainant’s equal access to BVU’s programs and
activities
-Constantly and consistently monitoring and advising rules, policies, and procedures to adhere to
state and federal nondiscriminations and harassment laws
Gallagher is excited about stepping into her position and really making a different.
“I think Christyn did a fantastic job paving the way and I look forward to building on her efforts,” Gallagher said.
As the Title IX Coordinator, Gallagher is most worried about the students. There are several reasons one should contact the Title IX Coordinator listed below.
-To seek information about their rights and courses of action available to resolve reports or
complaints involving potential sex discrimination.
-To file a complaint or make a report of sex discrimination.
-To notify BVU of an incident or policy or procedure that may raise potential Title IX concerns.
-To get information about resources (including confidential resources) and support services
regarding sex discrimination.
-To ask a question about BVU’s policies and procedures related to sex discrimination.
