Well friends, it’s that time of the year again when we all have to remember not to strangle our friends over politics. This can be a stressful time of year for all of us, especially for you political science majors. We all have our own opinions on politics, but we should also be educated on the subject. That being said, let’s talk about voting.
When thinking about voting, you must remember to make a truly informed choice. Some college students find that when they come to college, there is another point of view better suited for them than a previously held opinion. College is a big turning point for incoming freshmen, such as myself. Remember to take a break from all the homework, studying, and politics to breathe and have fun.
Let’s say you are from another state besides Iowa. Where do you vote? Well, you can vote in either state, but not both; it’s really up to you. If you plan to vote in your home state, you will probably need an absentee ballot, unless you decide to go home for the election. If you decide to vote here and are from a different state, you must register to vote here!
Another thing that is important to keep in mind is that your friends may or may not vote differently than you. Your friends might have different political beliefs than you, and this should not be a reason to stop liking said friends. Whether you vote for President Obama, Romney, or a third party, it is up to you. Try not to let other people’s voting habits affect yours, even your families. You are allowed to vote differently than your family, friends, acquaintances, zombies, millionaires, political figures, video game characters, musicians, artists, or anyone else I have neglected so callously to add to this list.
Many good resources for voting information are online. We live in the age of technology and information. Please utilize it. Rock the Vote is a good online voting resource with plenty of good information and even their own article on college voting (check it out)! I have even noticed in my Xbox Live exploits that they have their own surveys, polls, and more on the election, so make sure to check that out if you haven’t already. One of my personal favorite resources for the upcoming election is www.realclearpolitics.com. This has an electoral college voting map that shows who is winning the electoral vote in which states. It has articles from all over the country, video highlights, up to date polls, and loads of other election stuff!
I hope I didn’t fry your brain with all that! Keep it classy BVU!
