The week of May 4 – May 9 is First Amendment Week at Buena Vista University (BVU). Students from Associate Professor of Digital Media Andrea Frantz’s Legal and Ethical Perspectives class have prepared events to educate the campus about the First Amendment.
Here is a schedule of the events:
Two Fish Takes on Freedom of Religion
May 4, 5-6 p.m., 97.5 KBVU the Edge
A radio show discussing awareness about freedom of religion
F*** Censorship: Know Your S#!+
May 5, 7 p.m., Underground
An educational entertainment event to learn about your freedom of speech through music, poetry, and comedy — The event ends with an open mic where you can celebrate your freedom of speech.
Stop the Presses!
May 5-8, 7 p.m., Ch. 3 UCN
An interview with Frank LoMonte, Executive Director of Student Press Law Center, provides an exclusive look on student press
Who Wants to be a !@#$%*& Millionaire
May 5-8, 8 p.m. Ch. 3 UCN
A game show based upon First Amendment rights, specifically the freedom of speech
Issues Facing Student Press
May 6, May 8, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Outside Forum
Making a mock newspaper and putting in articles concerning issues about student press
Stonewall Riots: LGBT Freedom Revolution
May 6, 3-4 p.m.
The reception serves as a way for people to ask questions about the art piece
Life Without Freedom of Speech
May 6, 7-8 p.m., Hansen 8
Video about the freedom of speech and life without it, including a questionnaire and survey
Banned Plays
May 7, 7 p.m., Anderson Auditorium
Scences from “The Crucible,” “The Laramie Project,” and “The Children’s Hour” will be performed. The event focuses on scenes that caused the plays to be banned, their history, how audiences react to the plays today, and how the plays are affected by freedom of speech.
Hate Speech: Legal and Ethical Issues
May 9, 12 p.m., Forum
An interactive poster-like presentation on the nature of “hate speech.” Challenging participants to learn about the limits as well as ethical tension that arises.
