For many years, Family Weekend has been held during the later half of the spring semester. Buena Vista University (BVU) decided in the fall of 2014 that Family Weekend would be moved from the spring to the fall for the 2015-2016 academic year and will continue to be during the fall.
“[It is] primarily due to admissions and retention efforts. Keeping those freshmen students here on campus throughout their first six weeks and maybe then they won’t go home till fall break,” Dr. Becka Neary-DeLaPorte, Director of Student Activities and Leadership Development, said.
The new Family Weekend Committee started work in February to plan weekend for the students and their families. A total of 12 students and staff members make up the committee. The individuals are from multiple of departments and organizations, including University Marketing & Communication, Student Affairs, Resident Life, Admissions, Athletics, Orientation Team, Student Activities Board, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Esprit de Corps, Alumni Association Student Board, and Student Senate.
The BVU community can look forward to a variety of activities including Beaver Athletic games, Friday night entertainment, and a night football game.
