American Culture: United and Divided by Religion

Students and faculty share their reactions to a protest near the “victory bell” at Buena Vista University on Oct. 20, 2022. Approximately 30 BV community members at once decided to advocate for equality against a white, evangelical male protestor. The protestor was in contact with local law enforcement, in hopes of enlightening college students safely. That following week, media coverage surrounding the peaceful demonstration of the right to practice religion and freedom of speech caused tensions among faith and a sense of community to heighten. With anonymity as a contributor, this piece also highlights the messages and harassment that Samantha Johnson, a junior, experienced in response to the multimedia story that The Tack published on Oct. 29, 2022, titled “A Bond Over Free Speech.” To listen, click here.
