Senior quarterback Bobby Brown and freshman punter/placekicker Tyler Stolen represented the Buena Vista University (BVU) football team for the week ending Nov. 10 by both earning Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) honors for Male Athlete of the Week and Football Special Teams Performer of the Week, respectively.
Brown threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns and completed 21 of his 37 pass attempts. Brown’s last-second rushing touchdown led to the Beavers’ 34-32 victory over the Simpson College Storm. His 377-yard passing total is the second highest single game total since 2002. This is the second time Brown has been named Male Athlete of the Week in his career.
“We played hard the whole game, and we came ready to play. Our defense did a good job of stopping Simpson’s offense and putting us in good field position. Our offensive line and receivers did a good job of being competitive and doing what it takes to get us the win,” Brown said.
For three weeks in a row, Stolen has been named the IIAC Football Special Teams Performer of the Week. In the win over Simpson, Stolen punted six times, averaging 41 yards per attempt. Stolen also remains perfect in his PAT attempts.
The Beavers’ electrifying victory over the Storm came in the final seconds of the game when Brown had a four-yard touchdown as time expired. This was the first BVU win in Indianola since 1987.
“We never gave up; we just kept fighting throughout the game. We converted a lot of third downs, and Bobby’s will to win, led us down the field on the final drive,” Stolen said.
