John Bieber, a senior tennis player from Cherokee, IA, transferred to Buena Vista University (BVU) last semester after spending three years at Creighton University where he did not play tennis competitively. Bieber currently has a 4-2 combined singles and doubles record at BVU.
Bieber stated that transferring schools and adapting to a new coach is similar to adjusting to a new professor, but it is also nice to get an opportunity to play competitively again and to get to know a set group of guys.
Bieber shows a lot of ambition and dedication towards tennis by setting high goals for himself. He would like to maintain an undefeated at-home streak.
“It’s an incredibly hard goal [to maintain], but it would be something to work for,” Bieber said.
Bieber, as well as first year head coach at BVU Rick Halverson, has goals for the team. Halverson stated that no matter the team, one of the goals is for the quality of play to consistently improve as the season continues on.
“I always want each of my players to be playing at a higher level when we finish than when we started,” Halverson said. “John is the kind of player who goes hard every minute of practice from beginning to end, and this is a big reason why his game has shown constant improvement since day one.”
Men’s tennis is currently sitting at a 1-3 overall record, and they are 1-1 in conference play. The Beavers’ next home match is this coming Saturday, March 1, and they will face off against Loras College and Cornell College at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
