On Saturday, March 15, the Buena Vista University (BVU) men’s tennis team held a home indoor tennis meet in the Lamberti Recreation Center. The Beavers came up short in the conference match against Coe College, 9-0, along with a loss against Grand View University, 8-1.

“We played well. If you look at the individual scores, every match was close. We missed a couple points here and there, and that’s what mattered,” freshman tennis player Chris Habermann said.

In a tight match against the Vikings, the Beavers were able to pull off a doubles win with junior Kyle Weeden and senior Drake Swanson. This was the only Beaver win of the day.

“We were kind of down, so it was a huge win for our doubles team to get some energy going,” Swanson said.

Although the Beavers were not able to come out on top in the tough matches, they still have high spirits about their season and their accomplishments.

“So far, our season has been good. It’s been a lot better than last year. We’re improving, and I can only see us improving as the year goes on. We’re hoping to make the conference tournament and go as far as we can there,” Swanson said.

Before they reach the conference tournament, however, the Beavers have a couple of tough matches to get through.

“We have spring break coming up, but after that, we have three matches that are probably our most important matches of the season. We play Wartburg, Simpson, and Central. If we play like we are capable of playing, we should beat them,” Habermann said.

Much of the team’s overall success comes from the support each player contributes and the encouragement and confidence they offer to one another.

“Team chemistry overall is great. We are always cheering on our teammates. For instance, we will sit next to the court during another player’s match and coach each other, along with the support and leadership of Coach Halverson,” Habermann said.

The overall record for the Beavers is now 3-6, with a conference record of 2-4. The tennis team will hold another meet on Wednesday, April 16 in Storm Lake against Morningside College at 4 p.m.
