Because March Madness stirs up a lot of emotion for many basketball fans around campus, the Student Activities Board (SAB) hosted a March Madness bracket challenge for both the women and men’s NCAA Division 1 National Tournament. This was a way for students to have a campus-wide competition, along with the small pools that students make on their own. The men’s bracket winner was sophomore Kennedy Drey and the women’s bracket winner was senior Dylan Waugh.
March Madness refers to the month of March when the men and women’s basketball national tournament takes place. Sports fans around the country fill out brackets to see who is closest to guessing the outcome of the tournament. The biggest bracket challenge that took place this year was the, “Quicken Loans Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge” hosted by Warren Buffet. Out of the millions of participants that entered the contest, no one had a perfect bracket once the games got to the second round of play.
Junior SAB member Jeremy Prach, along with help from other members, organized this bracket challenge on Buena Vista University’s(BVU) campus.
“This is the second year that SAB has done the men’s bracket challenge and the first year doing the women’s bracket. Basically SAB did it because it was something that students were doing anyways and it doesn’t take much planning on SAB’s part,” Prach said.
There were 55 total participants this year. 38 people turned in brackets for the men’s side and 17 participated for the women’s bracket. There was no entry fee for the contest. The winners each received a $50 gift card to the BVU Athletics Shop.
