An annual community event, Fiesta Latina brought the cultural traditions of the Hispanic culture to Storm Lake.
Coordinated by Buena Vista University (BVU) students, Fiesta Latina occurs every spring at Chatauqua Park—except this year. Due to rain and wind, the public event was moved to King’s Pointe Golf Course Hall. But the festivities were still as great as any other year.
The purpose of the event is to celebrate and raise awareness about the Latino culture. There are activities, entertainment, and food all offered by local businesses and nationally-known performers.
All of the proceeds from food sales were donated to CAASA (Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault) and Faith, Hope, & Charity.
“My favorite part of Fiesta Latina was seeing all of the people in attendance, despite the poor weather,” head of the Budget Committee, head of the Vendors Committee and senior Estefany Gonzalez said. She estimates that there were between 400 and 500 people in attendance on Sunday.
The weather and change in location definitely affected the event. Last year around 1200 people attended Fiesta Latina.
One of the highlights for Gonzalez was Fitness Connections, a Brazilian Capoeira group from Des Moines. The dance group performed acrobatic stunts to the pleasure of the audience.
“This was the first time they [Brazilian Capoeira] were featured, and we hope that they will perform again,” Gonzalez said.
