Tory Beger is a junior exercise science major at Buena Vista University (BVU), and also the Beavers starting quarterback.
Beger comes to BVU from Greene Country High School, where he was a standout football player, earning All-District selection three years and preseason all-state once. He also holds the passing record for Greene Country High School.
“My family has always been big into the game of football. My dad played at William Penn and my brother played at Simpson, so I was around the football at a young age and I have loved the game ever since,” Beger said.
Beger went on after high school to play a year at Iowa Central Community College. After not getting the desired playing time, he decided to look to transfer.
“I finished up my AA degree in the summer, and looked for somewhere I would be able to compete for a starting spot in an offense that passed the ball a lot, so I chose BVU,” Beger said.
Coming to BVU, Beger sat out his sophomore season to fifth year senior Bobby Brown. This season, Beger is stepping up into his new role to the best of his ability.
“Earning everyone’s respect as a leader has been challenging as a transfer student. Also stepping in to replace a high powered offense after losing multiple offensive weapons on the team is difficult,” Beger said.
Teammates have nothing but good words to share about Beger. Sophomore starting running back, Cody Mowery, works extremely well along side Beger.
“We are constantly talking to each other. We definitely work and communicate well together. As a running back, I look for Tory to be able to lead the offense and know his assignments of the other positions, which he does really well,” Mowrey said.
Beger’s main goal for the season is to lead the team to a conference championship. To do this, a fast pace offense is necessary for the beavers.
“When Tory bumps up the tempo, the rest of the team has no choice but to follow along. He is always bringing people up which is crucial for our success,” Mowrey said.
Following this week’s by-week, the football team will resume play against Waldorf College here at Leslie J. Rollins stadium for a night game at 7 pm on Saturday Sept. 26.
