Leaving home for college is one of the most exciting yet challenging times in a student’s life. Now imagine leaving home for a college 3,300 miles away.

Welcome to the life of Jay Clarke, a junior business major from Anchorage, Alaska. Jay comes to Buena Vista University (BVU) after spending two years at Wentworth College in Boston, Massachusetts, to join the Beaver men’s soccer team. Jay, an all-conference selection in high school, will provide depth for the Beavers at the forward and midfield positions.

“Jay brings a different aspect to the game with his quickness and technical ability,” assistant men’s soccer coach Lugo Arenas said. “He can be a game-changer at any instance for us. He is dedicated and works every day to get better and better regardless how much effort it takes.”

Clarke was born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, before moving to St. Kitts and Nevis, where he discovered his love for soccer. jay2

“Growing up in Alaska for most of my high school life was really hard because moving from the Caribbean to Alaska was a really big change, bigger than anyone would imagine,” Clarke said. “But coming from Alaska was a bit of a change when I got to Iowa because everything is different here.”

When asked about being part of the Beaver soccer program, Clarke didn’t hesitate to hold his school in high regards.

“The first day I got here, I never met any of these guys before but the connection we all had, it felt like I’ve known them for years,” Clarke said. “The coaching staff is also really good, they always want to help you improve both on the field and off.”

Arenas spoke highly of Clarke’s presence and work ethic all together.

“We enjoy having him on the team and it’s a pleasure being able to coach someone with his work ethic,” continued Arenas.

3,300 miles is a far ways from home, but it can be easier to handle with the family and homey feel of the BVU community.
