With Thanksgiving coming up this week, I decided to ask a few BVU students what their personal favorite dishes were that they had with their families each year. Of course, dessert was a definite favorite for most, but a some held out for a few of the main courses. Read through some of the favorites below!
“My favorite Thanksgiving dish is my mom’s cranberry salad, with a twist! She chops up cranberries, apples, and different kinds of nuts and mixes this in cranberry jello. The presence of fruit and nuts makes it seem super healthy, despite the numerous cups of sugar present. I always start craving this dish around mid-October, and then I eat enough of it over Thanksgiving break that I’m good for the next year!”
– Haley Stevens
“I absolutely love apple pie. My mom always makes my favorite kind on both Thanksgiving and Christmas so I get to have it twice a year, but that’s still not enough!”
– Tory Beger
“My favorite Thanksgiving dish includes ALL of the deserts because I’m fat and I like sweets.”
– Cole Darrow
“The thing I look forward to the most is pumpkin pie with cool whip. I have a huge sweet tooth and crave pumpkin pie year round so I definitely love that I get to have a ton of it over Thanksgiving.”
– Cody Mowery
“Turkey is probably my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. My granny’s turkey is the best, and she only cooks it once a year so I definitely have to get me fill this week!”
– TJ Lint
“My favorite Thanksgiving dish would have to be my grandmother’s cherry dessert. It has a gram cracker crust, with cream cheese and whip cream filling, with cherries on top and it is wonderful! The ironic thing is that I didn’t always like this dessert, but once I finally did try it I was hooked. I would literally hide pieces so I could assure myself a second piece! One year my grandpa actually put a sign on the pan that said “Alli keep out” hahaha. This dessert holds a very special place in my heart though because my grandma actually taught me how to make the dessert before she passed away. She wasn’t well enough to physically help me but she sat right by me in her wheel chair and told me exactly what to do. So for the past two years I have been the one to make the dessert for family occasions, and this is a true honor, as simple as it is. This way we can always have a piece of my grandma, the heart of our family, at all family occasions.”
– Allison Leinen
“I’m gonna have to say deviled eggs because that’s really the only time my mom makes them.”
– Kyle Arnold
“Pumpkin pie is definitely my favorite because it always reminds me of my grandma’s house!”
– Owen Statlander
“My favorite Thanksgiving dish would have to be ham and potatoes. I’m a very picky eater, and I don’t like turkey at all so I always enjoy when my mom and grandma go out of their way to make ham. I think the reason I don’t like turkey is because it is very dry and flavorless. The texture makes me want to throw up. Ham is very juicy and has a lot of flavor, especially when my mom puts a special glaze on it. I like the potatoes because I can put gravy on it, which is actually my favorite part overall.”
– Mikenzi Monthei
“My favorite is pumpkin pie because it’s traditional, it’s dope, and it’s good stuff.”
– Brady Illg
“My mom makes this delicious orange salad that I love. This has mandarin orange wedges and tapioca pudding. It’s really simply but absolutely delicious. I’m really looking forward to having as much as possible this week to hold me over until next Thanksgiving!”
– Jack Johnson
“My favorite part of Thanksgiving is everything. Nothing is better than having a home cooked meal after being up at school and eating Sodexo for a semester.”
– Allison Mercer
I think we can all agree with Allison, there. Here’s to a wonderful Thanksgiving break – Everyone here at The Tack wish you safe travels and full stomachs to satisfy you for the upcoming final weeks of the semester!
