Janice Timmerman | Contributing Writer

Tanner Morris is a sophomore Biology major who is studying to become a chiropractor. Morris also plays basketball for the Buena Vista University (BVU) Beavers.

In his short time here, he has worked hard both in the classroom and on the court. Morris recently started his first varsity game for the Beavers at the season opener, Nov. 15, against Nebraska Wesleyan and lost with a score of 109-104.

Morris likes the aspect of teamwork and winning with his teammates, and also comments on being a good communicator.

“I’m passionate about the game because I enjoy being around my teammates and the teamwork that goes into winning. Being able to accomplish goals together. Basketball is truly a team sport, and we have to work together to win. I’m a good communicator and I think that helps me on and off the court. Many people would tell me I’m loud,” Morris said.

Head Coach Brian Van Haaften comments on Morris’s communication and hard work.

“He is an excellent communicator and talks a lot on the floor to help our defense work better. He is a listener and improves every day. He has a lot of leadership capabilities. He has gotten a lot stronger and committed to the program. He has taken it upon himself to become a real player,” Van Haaften said.

Morris takes responsibility upon himself to get better on the court and stay on top of things in the classroom. He talked about how traveling causes him to miss class and he doesn’t like that. Morris has set high goals for himself and expects himself to meet them. Coming to BVU was really a decision he made based on the academic program of Biology, and basketball was just an added incentive. He has learned time management skills and communication with his professors to balance school, basketball, and life outside of that.

The Beavers will travel to Gustavus Adolphus for a make up game this Sunday, Nov 29, with tip off beginning at 4 p.m.
