Storm sweeps Beavers in IIAC opener

Griffin Truslow | Contributing Writer

The Simpson Storm were ready to take the court as they defeated the Buena Vista University (BVU) women’s volleyball team in the Iowa Conference opener Wednesday evening inside Siebens Fieldhouse. Simpson wasted no time in handing Buena Vista their ninth loss of the season (25-15, 25-20, 25-15).

The Storm built up a strong lead early in the first game when they took advantage of the momentum and continued to put points up on their scoreboard. The Beavers struggled to match the Storm’s level of play.

BVU finished the night with a total of 18 kills and a 0.58 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kirsten Van Zuiden led the offensive attack with 7 of the 18 kills.

“Just knowing that when it comes down to a big point, I need to get a kill,” Van Zuiden said. She also contributes her success to her teammate’s defense and passing.

After reflecting on the loss, head coach Lori Slight admits that the team needs to claim a winning streak.

“We’ve got to come out and produce. The last time the beavers won a volleyball opener was the 2010 season,” Slight said.

Even with the loss, Slight and her team were grateful to the student body that came out and supported the team through it all.

“We would like to say thank you to the student body, faculty, and coaches that were there,” Slight said.

The Beavers are now 1-10 (0-1 IIAC) on the season after falling to the College of Saint Mary’s on Friday, Sep. 14. BVU will hit the road to play Dubuque on Wednesday, Sep. 19. The Spartans are 4-3 on the season.
