Beavers, rooks, and the big debate

Beavers%2C+rooks%2C+and+the+big+debate

Well, if there is one bright spot while looking back on the Iowa football season, it would have to be their victory over a team that is in a BCS Bowl. Yes, Iowa was the only team this year to defeat Northern Illinois, who will play Florida State (and probably get crushed) in a BCS Bowl this January. This is something Iowa State can’t say, but at least they can say they are in a bowl. Looking back at Iowa’s season, that might be their only silver lining. I’m not sure what to expect for next year, but I trust in Kirk; he’ll turn it around.

A big shout out to the Beaver men and women’s basketball clubs. They went a combined 4-0 last weekend and 5-6 last week overall. Nothing is better than watching some great Beaver basketball. The crowd at last Wednesday night’s home game was insane. If there is one area where BVU stands alone as a university, it is the student section at home basketball games.

So was this the weekend of the rookie quarterback? Russell, RGIII, and Luck all finished off games in dramatic fashion. Luck has all the leadership and skill you could ever hope for in a QB; he just makes the right play all the time. Russell wins you over with his hard work, smarts, and his will. You watch him for two or three plays, and his swag alone wins you over. No one has ever played the quarterback position like him, and it’s a treat to watch. He just has a knack for the big moment, and he is one guy I would not mind paying any price to watch in a game.

A big debate ensued in White 227 earlier this week when I asked my roommate TKast, “Who is the best non-Division I college basketball program in Iowa?” He thought for a moment and said that was a really good question. When I thought about it, Grinnell came to my mind, and Tyler said Grandview is alright, but there was no definite answer. Where is Buena Vista on that list? We gotta be near the top, don’t we? Another aspect of the question is: are we talking about right now or in the past? Of course I am biased toward BV, but we are consistently near the top of the IIAC, and we have beaten NAIA schools in the GPAC. I think we are better than Upper Iowa or Graceland and would hold our own against Grandview and Grinnell. We have to be considered at least. I think it’s a great debate and one I would love to ask Fred Hoiberg someday.

Thanks for the read everyone. You know it’s the best time of the year when ABC Family has begun its 25 Days of Christmas movie nights. I know I will be watching.

I think the B1G Network is replaying the B1G Championship game 24-7 for the next two weeks for any Nebraska fans that missed it.
