Dear Kyle,
What do you do when your classes have taken over? Your grades are doing amazing, but now you feel like you don’t have friends.
Sincerely,
Curious College Student
Curious College Student,
I think it is good that your grades are your top priority. It is hard for some students to put schoolwork first. It is also important to diversify your time while here at college. If you spend all of your time working on homework, you’re bound to drive yourself crazy. But the other extreme is hanging out with friends all the time and never doing homework, which will lead to poor grades.
I have found it to be beneficial to involve yourself in activities while on campus. Involving yourself will allow you to meet new people, and it is especially important to engage in activities that are outside your major. For instance, I am a Psychology major, but I spend time in the theatre department. Doing this will allow you to meet people that you otherwise wouldn’t encounter in your classes.
Allowing yourself a break from your homework to do activities will be very helpful to making sure you aren’t cooped up in your room or the library all day. By engaging in activities with other people, you open yourself up to making new friends. While your grades are a very important part of college, so is having friends. Being able to take a few hours away from the books and spending time with other people is key to staying successful in college.
You may be wondering how to make friends in the first place. Making friends is easy for some people, and somewhat of a challenge for others. I think it’s important to be nice to everyone, which, if your kindness is genuine, people will notice and want to be around you. Making friends and being nice to people are lifelong skills that we should always be practicing.
Taking a break from the books, getting involved, and being a social person are all things that can help you to develop social connections during your time here on campus.
Wishing You the Best,
Kyle
