There a many players who step on and off the field during the game of football, however, there is one Buena Vista University (BVU) senior who did not get to enjoy this luxury.
Cam Knobbe, an offensive lineman for the BVU football team, saw his senior season pass as he watched on the sidelines with a broken fibula. Knobbe is a business management major and a Carroll, Iowa native.
“The toughest thing is to watch my team struggle and not be able to do anything about it,” Knobbe said.
Although watching from the sidelines, Knobbe still has a strong senior leadership role for the team. He has started in every game since his freshman season, during which time the Beavers’ offense was ranked fourth in the IIAC, Knobbe has a strong influence on what his team does.
“I see him talking to the guys one on one and helping them out. He’s embraces that he’s a captain so he’s going to find a way to help them out,” tenth year head coach Jay Anderson said.
Since Knobbe came to BVU as a freshman he has had a strong presence on the field starting in every game. During his freshman season the Beavers’ offense was ranked fourth in the IIAC.
“Coming in as a freshman and starting from there you go through growing pains. It definitely hurts our team with the experience Cam had and now not having it coming into this year,” Anderson said.
Anderson speaks highly of Knobbe’s leadership but it’s his physical presence on the field that Anderson misses most.
“There’s going to be a difference in maturity level and physicalness from a senior to a second year guy. I wish we had him back for another year. It’s unfortunate any time a guy loses a year to an injury, especially for a senior,” Anderson said.
Knobbe and the rest of the Beavers travel to Pella, Iowa, this Saturday, Nov. 7 to face off in one of their last IIAC games against the Dutch of Central.
