Leaving one home-away-from-home to transfer to a new college is a bit of a terrifying experience. But junior transfer, Alexandra (Ali) Grein, seems to be adapting to life as a Beaver exceptionally well.
After earning an Associates’ Degree in Liberal Arts from Iowa Central Community College, Grein joins Beaver Nation as a member of the volleyball team, majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Coaching. Grein comes from small town of Algona, Iowa.
“When looking at schools, I was looking for a great education program that would challenge me,” Grein said.
One of four juniors on the Beaver Volleyball squad, Grein came in and immediately earned a starting position. She has seen time all across the net, hitting all three positions and playing all six rotations at one time or another.
Grein’s versatility is something that has helped her flourish here at BVU. In the Beaver’s first 18 matches, she is averaging just over 2 kills per set and sits third on the team with blocks, averaging 0.59 blocks per set.
She credits Dr. Callie Friesen with much of her love of our BVU’S Education program.
“Dr. Friesen is someone I look up to, in terms of being the epitome of an educator. I really think she has the potential to help me out in the long run and will help me become a great teacher,” Grein said.
Teammate and roommate, Lindsay Meyer, has gotten to know Ali quite well. Some of Lindsay’s favorite things about Ali include the amount of Netflix she watches and the willingness of Ali to always go on late night food runs. Meyer has gotten to know ‘The Office’ well, as Ali always watches at least an episode every night before they go to bed. Meyer credits Ali’s work ethic and outgoing personality for her success so far in terms of adjusting to a new college.
“She’s just an all-around great person, which makes it easy to make new friends,” Meyer said.
To see Grein in action on the volleyball court, check out the Beaver’s next home game, Friday, Sept. 30th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. as they take on IIAC conference opponent, Wartburg. The Beavers are currently 10-8 overall and 1-0 in IIAC play.
