Thomas Wisecup is a junior on the Buena Vista University (BVU) Men’s basketball team. Wisecup came to BVU from Sergeant Bluff High School, where he was a four-year letterwinner and earned first team All-Conference and All-District his junior and senior year.
Wisecup started playing at the age of four, and hasn’t stopped since.
“I love everything about the game. I love being apart of a team and all the work that goes in on and off the court,” Wisecup said.
Wisecup knew that he wanted to play basketball when he began his college search. There were many aspects that led to his choice of school.
“BVU was my first visit, and I loved everything about it. The small campus, great coaches and professors, and it just felt like a great place to be,” Wisecup said.
Wisecup came in and instantly made in impact on the program. He saw action off the bench his freshman year, and started all 27 of the team’s games his sophomore year.
With a year of solid experience on the court, Wisecup’s teammates have nothing but high expectations for him.
“He played well last year only being a sophomore, but having that year of varsity experience under his belt going into his junior season will help him. Tom’s ability to knock down shots and make smart decisions with the ball will make him one of the best guards in the league,” senior teammate Kennedy Drey said.
Wisecup loves many things about BVU, but his favorite is by far the teammates and friends he gets to play with.
“We have a really tight group. There is always someone to hang out with, workout with, or study with. Just having a group of great guys to be around is my favorite part,” Wisecup said.
This year’s Beaver basketball team returns some key plays, but will also have many new faces stepping in to important roles on the team. Wisecup still expects greatness from his team.
“Even with the new guys, our expectations are still the same, a conference championship, and I know we have a team that can do that. We have great team chemistry and if we put it all together night in and night out, people will be happy with that we accomplish as a team,” Wisecup said.
The BVU Men’s basketball team opens their home season this Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. against Gustavus Adolphus and this Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. against Augsburg.
