The Buena Vista University (BVU) softball team took the field last Saturday at NAIA Baker University for a non-conference double header.
“Knowing that it was out first weekend playing outside, I knew it would be an adjustment for all of us. Our plan was to come out strong and get ahead right away in order to get everyone some playing time,” sophomore Cheyanne Boland said.
In game one, senior Jordan Pilcher came up big, going 3-4 with an RBI as well as a run scored. Boland also contributed two RBI’s and scored once. Junior pitcher Jenna Falline kept Baker University scoreless through the first game. The Beavers took game one 4-0.
“I went into the weekend knowing that I had seven innings that I needed to throw with as few mistakes as possible,” Falline said.
In the second game, Boland drove in three runs with a double. Freshman Moriah Guyett pitched the first four innings, while freshman Keely Bancroft pitched the final three.
“I think both our offense and defense played a huge role in our sweep over the weekend. Without our bats, we wouldn’t have been able to snatch the wins, and our defense played solid giving up minimal errors throughout all 14 innings,” Falline said.
The Beavers improve their record to 6-4 overall. They will take the field again in St. Louis next weekend, March 21-22 for the Washington University Invite. Also over spring break, they will head to Clermont, Florida from March 24-27 where they will play eight games.
